The Dental Wand

Many people are reluctant to visit a dentist because of a fear of pain and injections, usually resulting from a previous bad experience. We aim to reduce this fear by using an alternative method of administering local anaesthetic – the Dental Wand.

The Wand is essentially a computer-controlled dental injection. Whilst still containing a small needle (something is needed to penetrate the skin after all) the actual flow rate of the local anaesthetic is controlled by a computer. This means that the injection is guaranteed to be slow and steady and therefore comfortable.

The equipment looks similar to a miniature computer tower. On the top of the tower sits a cartridge with local anaesthetic. A tube connects this to a pen-like handpiece which looks just like a ball point pen and it is this that the dentists holds to administer the anaesthetic. No scary needles on view!

The cartridge holder, tube and wand handpiece are all single-use disposables.

It is possible for the dentist to control the speed of administering the anaesthetic with a standard syringe, but the idea of the Wand is to take out the ‘human error’. This can be very reassuring for people with previous bad experiences.
